ISO 9001:2026: what is confirmed and how to prepare

ISO 9001:2026 is in the final publication stage. ISO has announced that the final draft was approved and that the sixth edition is scheduled for 16 September 2026. Until official publication, however, lists shared by consultants or on social media should not be treated as the definitive text.
The best preparation is not to rewrite procedures now. It is to make the QMS ready to be compared, adjusted and demonstrated when the official edition becomes available.
What is the official status of ISO 9001:2026?
In an update published on 7 August 2026, ISO/TC 176/SC 2 reported that the final draft had received overwhelming international approval and scheduled publication for 16 September. The official ISO 9001 page still lists the sixth edition as under publication.
| Information | Status on 6 September 2026 |
|---|---|
| The final draft was approved | Confirmed by ISO |
| Publication is scheduled for 16 September | Confirmed by the responsible committee |
| The new edition has replaced ISO 9001:2015 | No |
| The transition period is definitive | Await formal guidance |
| Third-party summaries equal the standard text | No |
What to do before publication
1. Assign responsibility for the transition
Select an owner and record the sources the organization will accept. Prioritize ISO, the national standards body, the certification body and the applicable accreditation forum.
2. Update the QMS inventory
Confirm which processes, documents, risks, indicators, audits, nonconformities and actions are active. A gap analysis loses value when the new standard is compared with an outdated inventory.
3. Resolve known issues
The revision does not turn expired documents, overdue actions or indicators without analysis into new problems. Closing those gaps strengthens the transition baseline regardless of the new wording.
4. Preserve decisions and evidence
Record why each change was approved, who implemented it and how effectiveness will be verified. Traceability prevents the transition from becoming a disconnected collection of files.
What not to do yet
- do not change manuals or procedures based only on rumors;
- do not buy or sell a “definitive checklist” before publication;
- do not assume every wording change requires a new process;
- do not wait until the next audit to assign transition ownership.
How to perform the gap analysis after publication
For every applicable requirement, document four answers: how the organization meets it today, what evidence demonstrates conformity, what gap exists and what action is required. Then prioritize by risk, operational impact and transition deadline.
A spreadsheet can start this work, but it becomes fragile when documents, owners, risks and actions remain separate. A Quality Management System connects the analysis to evidence and follow-up. Konvéz Quality brings documents, audits, risks, nonconformities, action plans and indicators into a traceable workflow.
Next question: what changed in the conceptual foundation?
ISO 9000:2026, which establishes quality management fundamentals and vocabulary, has already been published. Understanding it helps teams interpret the language behind the upcoming requirements standard. Continue with ISO 9000:2026 — main changes.

Frequently asked questions
When will ISO 9001:2026 be published?
ISO has announced that the sixth edition is scheduled for 16 September 2026. As of 6 September, the standard was still listed as under publication.
Has ISO 9001:2026 already replaced the 2015 edition?
No. Until the new edition is officially published, ISO 9001:2015 and Amendment 1:2024 remain the published references.
Should procedures be changed before publication?
It is not prudent to revise documents based on unofficial lists. An organization can organize processes, owners and evidence, but should wait for the published text and formal transition rules before completing its gap analysis.
How should an organization start preparing?
Confirm the QMS inventory, process owners and the status of documents, risks, indicators, audits and actions. After publication, compare each requirement and turn confirmed gaps into a controlled plan.
